Investigator Meetings and Site Training: A Necessary Evil, We Can Do Better
It’s time to admit it: site training stinks, and it’s impossible to get it right. What’s worse is that conventional site training methods don’t even work. By “work,” we mean it should teach site personnel everything they need to know, such that they can run any study visit without having to play detective. Today, this training is often deployed as a series of PDF slides or SCORM files for users to view and sign off, creating an evidence trail for regulators to “prove” that site personnel were properly trained. And it is precisely this reason that site training has taken this form.
Unfortunately, the entire industry is now stuck with a training framework that is disliked and doesn’t work, but it satisfies regulators, which means it’s not going away. While we may not be able to completely abandon this framework, we can—and should—bolster this approach with methods that actually work to help sites conduct a study as intended. Isn’t this the entire plot of science, anyway?
